ELEMENTS OF A BLOG

Some elements are common to many blogs, so there is a kind of design precedent you can follow when you first start out. A classic blog design has a header, a simple date design, reader friendly body copy, easily discernable links, some modules in columns, and a footer. Each of these classic blog design elements is covered in more detail in the sections that follow. Sometimes it's great to have something to follow, just so that you can break the rules.
The top part of your blog is usually the place where you introduce your "identity." It's generally the first to load, so it makes the first impression. For the best effect, have something simple yet memorable in this area, something that represents the "feel" of your blog.

One of the most prevalent elements in a blog is the date. Although you can choose to display the date numerically or in a tiny point size after each post, many bloggers opt to present a date before each post. Aside from breaking the information up nicely, it helps a reader see right away if there is a new post today. That being said, some bloggers deviate from the norm. Deviants are good.

Your body copy is all the text on your blog; it's the main feature. We cover how to design your text for best results in some detail "Blogging with Style." Key things to remember are font size and ample space between lines. Don't make your text too small, and space your lines out a bit if you can. Don't be afraid of white space. Ample white space around and between the lines of your text helps make it more legible, and it also puts your words on display and makes them into a design feature. Type can be beautiful if it is thoughtfully arranged.

Links are a huge part of blogging. A blog post is usually some form of commentary with a link to the subject being commented on. It's important that your links are easy to spot and that your readers recognize them as links.

In the early days of the web, a link was blue and underlined, and that was that. There was no question as to what was a link and what was text. Today, there are many choices. Your link color can be any color, it can be underlined or not underlined, have a rollover effect, and so on.

Feel free to design your text and links as you see fit, but strive to present your links in a distinctive way that obviously separates them from the rest of your body copy. If your text is black and your links also are black but underlined, don't underline other words in your text that aren't links. It will confuse your readers, and they might think they have discovered a broken link.
